The challenge
Atlas crews inspected infrastructure in tunnels, basements and rural sites where connectivity was unreliable at best. Inspections were recorded on paper and retyped into a desktop system that evening — a process that lost photos, introduced transcription errors, and cost every crew half a day a week.
What we did

Designed the data model offline-first from the start: the local database is the source of truth, and sync is a background reconciliation rather than a requirement.

Built a conflict resolution strategy around per-field timestamps so two crews editing the same asset never silently overwrite each other.

Compressed and queued photo uploads so a crew returning to signal syncs a full day of evidence in under a minute.

Shipped through TestFlight to a pilot crew for six weeks before wider rollout, reworking the capture flow twice based on what they hit in the field.
The outcome
Every inspection is now captured once, at the asset, with photographic evidence attached. Crews recovered roughly three and a half hours a week each, and the transcription error class disappeared entirely.
